Honorable Mentions

Before discussing my Top 3 Games of the Year, I would like to give small shout outs for games I enjoyed that did not make the list.

The Quarry

A spiritual successor to Until Dawn, about camp counselors who stay at summer camp for one extra night as the worst night of their lives ensues. I really enjoy choice based games and The Quarry is by far superior to any of The Dark Pictures Anthology games. The characters feel distinct and have a personality of their own. In my opinion, The Quarry was not as scary as I anticipated it to be. It felt more similar to a mystery game where you are trying to figure out what is going on around you. If you’re looking for a replayable game with various outcomes, check out The Quarry!

Metal Hellsinger

A rhythm-shooter game, with an original Metal soundtrack. The player can unlock perks by completing challenges that will help him/her through each level. If you enjoy metal music, that will make you want to play Metal Hellsinger for sure!

3. Tiny Tina's Wonderlands

Did you play the Borderlands 2 DLC Tiny Tina’s Assault on Dragon Keep and thought, “I would love a full game of this”? This game is for you! Wonderlands expands on that DLC in every way! Even though this is a spin-off game, Wonderlands captures the Borderlands atmosphere perfectly while adding Dungeons and Dragons gameplay elements to the mix. Tiny Tina is a chaotic Dungeon Master who will change scenarios on whim which provides a hilarious setting as you explore the world around you. I would advise to only play the base game as the DLC packs are completely a waste of money. There are 4 DLCs with 4 levels. Each level is a repeat of the previous level only adding a higher difficulty. It is very tedious and quite honestly a let down. DLCs aside, Tiny Tina’s Wonderlands was a very enjoyable experience!

2. Cult of the Lamb

This game was on my radar immediately after a trailer from last year’s summer video game showcases. In Cult of the Lamb, you play as the cutest lamb ever and recruit followers for your cult as you proceed with your dungeon crawling adventures. The combat is quite basic, but there are a variety of weapons and curses (special attacks) you can use. Each dungeon is randomized, so every adventure is different! After completing the game, you can stay in the world and keep playing if you so choose. The art style in this game is adorable! This is a game that I will continue to play even though I have unlocked 100% of the trophies.

1. Horizon Forbidden West

Horizon Forbidden West is my game of the year! As a big fan of Horizon Zero Dawn, the sequel was an improvement in every single category. Many people complained about the fighting mechanics in the first game and with new weapon and ammo types, it diversifies each combat scenario. The world is larger and full of life. Each settlement and tribe has a distinct personality. Every NPC is unique. Horizon Forbidden West succeeds at expanding the Horizon universe and pushes the narrative for a third game which I will be eagerly awaiting.
