Pokémon Scarlet/Violet

As a 90s baby that grew up with Pokémon, this game has completely reignited my love for the franchise. I remember playing “catch that Pokémon” while running around the school playground, linking game boys for trading and battling, getting yelled at by teachers for bringing the trading cards into school.

However, with every Pokémon thing I did I envisioned an open world experience and that’s what these new games are delivering. Despite its occasional glitches (resulting in very funny memes), it feels like the game made just for 8 year old me.

Inscryption

I went into this game knowing very little about the story, and I’m sure glad I went in blind. This game surprised the ever horror-lovin-hell out of me.

I went in wanting an atmospheric horror deck-building game, and got so much more. I don’t want to spoil anything for those that haven’t played yet, but this game had me spiraling into theories and I was one more twist away from breaking out the pins and strings for an investigation board.

I know this came out a couple years ago but I picked it up for the ps5 release, and I gotta say they made some cool innovations with the updated controller.

Marvel Snap

I’m very surprised in myself that I included a mobile game, but since games that are related to card gaming (Pokémon Violet being card game adjacent) seem to be the theme I figured I’d include this one.

Boy was I shocked by how much fun I’ve had with Marvel Snap. The gameplay is simple, with matches lasting only a couple of minutes which makes getting in a few games very easy to do throughout a busy day.

The deck strategies and combinations are exciting as you get a real multiverse feel. Being able to utilize so many Marvel characters you wouldn’t normally pair is a nice touch.

With a reward gambling component, you get to choose how much you risk each game, which makes taking chances on new and exciting decks a no-brainer. No need to stress about the “meta” of this game.
